Athens-Clarke Recycling takes a pub crawl downtown

By on October 15, 2009

Every day of the week, the thousands of Athenians head downtown for their ritual hang-out sessions with friends. Whether going out to the bars or to a concert, drinks are always present.

ACC Recycling, with the help of Greeks Going Green and Go Green Alliance, has organized a pub crawl to help raise money for a recycling program in downtown Athens.

From when the bars open until last call, multiple bars will have drink specials and recycling bins for people to recycle their bottles.

When: Thursday
Where: All over downtown

Instead of a ticket or a stamp to get the specials, T-shirts will be given out for $10 that should be worn or carried around to each of the participating bars.

Over 20 bars will be hosting this event, including The Loft, Barcode, Arch Bar, Sandbar, Sideways, and Boar’s Head.

Kristine Kobylus, program education specialist at ACC Recycling, helped create this event to showcase where the bins are located and to make it easier for Athens residents to recycle. She just understands that drinking is the favorite activity in the downtown area.

“We’re not promoting drinking; we’re just promoting the new recycling bins,” Kobylus said. “We put out about 50.”

Money raised for the event will go to the purchase of more Anheuser-Busch recycling bins to placed all around downtown. Because of the mass amount of trash left out on game days, major attention is being put on recycling around the town.
