CRIME NOTEBOOK: Student garners felony possession (w/police reports)
University student Gabriel Seyoung Choi was arrested and charged Tuesday with felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police report:
Choi was arrested at his apartment after police found a felony amount of marijuana in two zip lock bags and $530 cash in his desk.
After police responded to an anonymous tip that someone was smoking marijuana in Choi’s apartment, the arresting officer knocked on his door.
Choi told the officer he had not been smoking and was alone, then allowed the officer to search his apartment.
The officer saw a “water bong” and a pipe, both smelling of burnt marijuana, sitting on Choi’s coffee table, then asked him where he kept his marijuana.
Choi said it was in his bedroom, opened his desk and showed the marijuana to the officer. Officers took photographs of the evidence.
Choi was arrested at 9:50 p.m.
Red light runner
Andrew Brandon Matthews, 24, was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony driving with a suspended or revoked license, failure to obey a traffic control device and habitual violator.
According to the University Police report:
Matthews was pulled over after the arresting officer saw him run a red light at the intersection of East Campus Road and Baldwin Street.
When running a check on Matthews’ license, the officer saw it was suspended in August 2006 for habitual violator revocation and Matthews had a valid interlock permit.
The car Matthews was driving did not have an interlock system – commonly installed to stop people from driving after drinking – and Matthews said no such system was ever installed.
Matthews was arrested on Thomas Street at Broad Street at 11:48 p.m.
Sexual battery in Russell Hall
A University student worker reported she was the victim of a sexual battery early Wednesday morning at Russell Hall.
According to University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson, the student’s butt was slapped without her consent.
The student decided not to have the incident investigated by University Police, and the incident has been referred to the University’s Equal Opportunity office, the office responsible for dealing with sexual discrimination.
