Friday hex hits Bulldogs again in loss to Gamecocks
T.G.I.N.F.
What does the “N” stand for? Not.
An acronym that the Georgia volleyball team may want to trademark following yet another Friday loss its sixth of the season coming at the hands of the South Carolina Gamecocks.
“I’m really trying to figure out the Friday thing and I’ve started to notice that our energy Friday just isn’t what it is on Sunday,” head coach Joel McCartney said. “I need to investigate that more internally and to figure out what our routine is, our pattern. We’re lacking energy on Fridays and I’m not sure where that’s coming from.”
The Bulldogs (11-8, 2-6 SEC) held a 12-11 lead in the opening set but failed to hold on as the Gamecocks (11-7, 3-6 SEC) went on a 14-5 run to take the early one-set lead.
Despite a set-high six kills from junior outside hitter Erika Clark, the Bulldogs weren’t able to muster enough defense as the Gamecocks posted a .297 hitting percentage that ultimately led to their comeback.
Georgia got out to another lead in the second set by a score of 15-13 but following a 12-6 South Carolina run found itself on the losing end of a 25-21 set score.
Clark and junior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez each had four kills in the set but Georgia didn’t have an answer for South Carolina senior outside hitter Ivana Kujundzic, who led the way with six kills of her own on a .429 hitting percentage.
Georgia took the first point of the third and final set for its third straight set lead but once again failed to capitalize on it.
Despite a .289 third set hitting percentage from the Bulldogs, South Carolina posted a .362 hitting percentage of its own in order to take down Georgia by a set score of 25-23.
South Carolina came into Athens on a four-game losing streak following losses to Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida and LSU_all of whom have a winning percentage of .700 or better.
“The team is playing pretty free if it’s a team that’s nationally ranked or has some credibility on paper but we’re falling to the pressure of a team that we feel like we should be in it to win it,” McCartney said.
Following the three-set sweep, Georgia will turn its attention to the No. 9 Florida Gators who will visit the Ramsey Center on Sunday afternoon.
Revenge will be on the mind of the Gators as they were defeated by the Bulldogs last season in Athens 3-2 to end an 18-year losing streak.
“Here’s a match on paper that probably looks like we shouldn’t win it. We provide a much better energy and focus on Sunday,” McCartney said. “We’ll get after it tomorrow and we’ll try to figure out in the long haul what’s the problem on Fridays.”
The match against Florida will tip-off at 1:30 pm at the Ramsey Student Center.
