A University student told Athens-Clarke County Police he was robbed by a taxi cab driver early Friday after attempting to get a ride home from downtown.

The student told police at 2:15 a.m. Friday a cab driver, after picking him up from a downtown location, drove him to Winterville Road, pulled over, hit him in the face, pulled him out of the cab and robbed him of $70 at gunpoint.

The student had a friend pick him up, but didn’t call the police until 11:25 a.m. Friday because he was intoxicated, he told police.
