Get free computer checkups

By on October 20, 2009

Think your computer is running a little slower than normal? Got pesky spyware you can’t get rid of?

Enterprise Information Technology Services and Telecommunications, Electronics and Computer Services are happy to help. The two groups will partner up to host the Fall 2009 Computer Health and Security Fair today between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Miller Learning Center.

“A student can bring in a laptop that is running slower than normal, and we’ll have IT professionals who will fix it right there on the spot,” said Bert DeSimone, director of communications for EITS.

Any student, faculty or staff member can bring their personally owned computer to the fair.

Services – free virus scans, software updates and spyware removal – will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Professionals will speak about ways to protect against phishing attacks, a form of identity theft.

The event is being held as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Sponsored by a division within the Department of Homeland Security since 2001, the program is designed to encourage citizens to protect their computers and the nation’s cyber infrastructure from online threats.

“Essentially, the goal is just to make everyone aware of their responsibilities on the Internet,” DeSimone said.

He also encouraged all University students, faculty and staff to actively practice cyber safety.

“Make sure you have virus protection and make sure you never give a password away in an e-mail,” he said. “Be aware, be cautious and be alert.”
