The pack of dogs in Hotel Indigo’s lobby on Wednesday evenings has likely confused guests checking in. Yet they haven’t mistakenly entered a hotel for dogs but rather arrived during Canine Cocktail Hour.

In an effort to attract a more diverse crowd, Hotel Indigo’s Phi Bar has opened its doors to dogs, given that they are accompanied by an owner with a leash. During Canine Cocktail Hour, the dogs and their owners can wander in and out of the bar’s outside patio and inside lounge to make friends with other duos of man and best friend.

Though the dogs can’t actually drink, they can munch on complimentary dog treat cocktails that are filled with artificial bacon and milkbones. For humans of age, the bar offers discounted, dog-themed drinks such as greyhounds and salty dogs, which bartender Jeremy Miller said are “equally as tasty as they are fun-sounding.”

Whitney Thompson, a senior finance major from Atlanta, has brought her dog Herschel to Canine Cocktail hour for the past few weeks.

“Herschel’s made a few friends, including the famous Lumpkin Moreno, which is great because it’s not often that places have events for you to bring your dog on purpose. But here, there are lots of friends for Herschel to play with, which is fun for him and for me to watch,” Thompson said.

Some Athens residents think events like Canine Cocktail Hour are too few and far between.

Athens is a great place to go on walks with dogs, but many places do not welcome dogs inside as they may create a disturbance.

People wanting to take their dogs with them are then forced to leave them locked inside.

“Athens has such a big dog population, but there is not much for our dogs to do,” Thompson said

In a city where a love for dogs and the Dawgs coincide, a happy hour for both only makes sense.
