Classic Camelot tale gets Broadway spin

By on October 22, 2009

The story of King Arthur and the Round Table is well known, but no one has seen the beloved story like this before.

The Broadway Entertainment Series production of Camelot comes to the Classic Center featuring the musical score of My Fair Lady’s Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. The play follows the story of King Arthur, his wife Guenevere, and Lancelot, the queen’s lover and the King’s enemy turned best friend. The play is adapted from T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, and consists of spellbinding plots and lovable characters.

“The best part about the play is that the script is amazingly well crafted,” said Mark Harapiak, actor who plays King Arthur in this production. “[Lerner and Loewe] have created such great music, it’s hard not to love the play.”

Having originated in Canada, this production has already toured for months on end and performed nearly 40 plays since June.

“We have had an amazing time so far,” Harapiak said about touring in the south. “We really love the southern hospitality.”

Harapiak simply cannot get enough of Camelot. This touring of the play marks his third production.

“I somehow keep getting casted in this play,” said Harapiak. “But this is the first time I have gotten to play King Arthur, so that in and of itself is a treat for me.”

Harapiak describes his character as being a happenstance king who is trusted into the role without really desiring it.

“It is a challenge,” he said, “but it is very rewarding as well.”

Harapiak, who started his acting career later in life, began as a dancer.

“I turned to acting due to the problem with longevity in the dancing career,” he said. “I think that is why I love this play so much. It is an incredible musical.”

Camelot was written in 1960, and has been wildly popular since its creation. Celebrating almost 50 years of success, Harapiak praises the play as being fun and exciting still.

“I keep coming back to this play,” he said. “It is really spectacular.”
