Sharkwing Theatre group brings comedy, improv to Cine

By on October 22, 2009

Sharkwing is a group of students who have come together to write comedy for the best of reasons: the thrill of it.

“The core group has been doing this in some way since high school,” said Harry Valentine, 21, a theatre and English major from Athens. “It went from improv to live shows and Youtube videos now.”

This Friday’s midnight show at Cine is the fifth live show from the group, who try to have at least one show per semester. The group was started in 2007 and features people from theatre and non-theatre majors alike. It now includes seven members, but the size of the cast is always changing.

“All of our live shows feature all new material,” said Clint Orr, a Film Studies major from Winder.

All of the shorts are available for viewing on the Sharkwing Web site. They often feature the members in costume in parody of movies and celebrities. Genre fans will get a kick out of the nerd tropes and conventions roasted in shorts like ‘Bar Trek’ and ‘Batmen.”

The short ‘Michael Phelps Official Marijuana Apology,’ a short lampooning the Olympic swimmer, has received almost 10,000 views on Youtube.

Audience members turned hopeful comedians need only apply via the group’s Web site with a clip of their own.

Valentine and other members of the cast said that they wish to maintain an air of fun and creativity without taking the future of the group too seriously.
