Nadja Gilchrist advances at ITA Southeast Regionals

Georgia sophomore Nadja Gilchrist won a pair of matches Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships.

In the second round, Gilchrist posted a 6-0,6-2 win over Breanna Atkinson (Stetson). Then in the round of 16, she outlasted Anna Bartenstein (Miaimi) 6-4,3-6,6-3. Gilchrist, who is ranked No. 43 nationally, improved to 5-2 on the year while Bartenstein fell to 5-1. Gilchrist faces No. 62 Diana Nakic (Georgia State) on Sunday.

Bulldog junior Cameron Ellis fell in the round of 32 to Jenny Frisell (Central Florida) 6-4,6-3. In a late first round match Friday, Bulldog senior Naoko Ueshima dispatched Shannon Gunning (Stetson) 6-1,6-0. In the round of 32 Saturday, sixth-ranked Laura Vallverdu (Miami) defeated Ueshima 6-1,6-2.

In the doubles, Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson breezed in to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 win over Amy Sargeant and Federica Suess (Florida State). The Bulldog tandem is the No. 2 seed and ranked sixth nationally. Meanwhile, the Ellis-Ueshima team was eliminated by the eighth seeded team of Lauren McCreless and Francesca Segarelli (FSU) 8-1. The Gilchrist-Gullickson team will be in action Sunday at 10 a.m. against Valentina Galbarini and Carolina de los Santos (Stetson).

The singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in New Haven, Conn. The elite event, slated for Nov. 5-8, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.

Admission is free to the tournament on the Georgia Tech campus, which features players from around the state of Georgia and Florida. Parking is available in the Alexander Memorial Coliseum lot.
