Women golfers move up to 11th
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The No. 8-ranked Georgia women’s golf team moved up to 11th at the NCAA Fall Preview after posting a 13-over 301 in Saturday’s second round at the Country Club of Landfall.
Freshman Kendall Wright led the Bulldogs with an even-par 72, an even more impressive score considering the constant rain throughout the final nine holes. Georgia also counted a pair of 75s from Marta Silva Zamora and Emilie Burger and Milena Savich’s 79. Carolina Andrade’s 81 was dropped.
“The conditions were tougher today, but we survived it,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “We started at 9:15 and didn’t finish until around 4:15 so it was a pretty long day. (The weather) really opened up right after we made the turn and they pulled everyone off the course for a while. Even when we went back out, there was a pretty steady rain the rest of the day and since we’re on the coast, it was that horizontal rain at times.”
Georgia teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of the course first. Wright moved to 1-under with a birdie at No. 10 but then had bogeys at No. 12, No. 15 and No. 16 to fall to 2-over. A birdie at No. 17 and an eagle-3 at No. 18 pushed her back into red numbers at that halfway point. Consecutive bogeys at No. 4 and No. 5 put Wright at 1-over, but she regained a stroke with a birdie at No. 8.
“Kendall played really well,” Hester said. “To shoot even par under those conditions is just really strong. Burger hung in there, and Marta was 3-over with a double bogey pretty early. One more better score and I think we could’ve made a pretty good move. Carolina and Milena struggled. The conditions were tough and if things weren’t going well, it probably felt that much worst. I think they had 11 three-putts between them. It’s not that we’re not capable of hitting the golf shots. We still struggled on the greens, but we’ll keep working on it.”
Top-ranked UCLA carded a 2-over 290 to move atop the team leaderboard. The Bruins own an eight-shot lead over No. 20 Wake Forest. The Deamon Deacons were bolstered by a 3-under 69 from Cheyenne Woods that moved her into the individual lead by one over Auburn’s Cydney Clanton.
For Georgia, Silva Zamora is tied for 16th at 147, Burger and Wright are tied for 41st at 151, Savich is tied for 62nd at 157 and Andrade is 81st at 163.
The Preview field includes nine of the nation’s top-10 teams playing the same layout that will host the 2010 NCAA Championships next May.
“I think we’ll walk away feeling more prepared for the national championships than we did when we got here,” Hester said.
