BRAcapella event raises money, awareness for breast cancer

By on October 26, 2009

As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, three University groups have come up with a fitting finale.

Tonight, Zeta Tau Alpha; Noteworthy, the University’s female a cappella group and the Accidentals, the University’s male a cappella group, will present BRAcappella, an a cappella concert benefiting breast cancer awareness. A cappella is singing without accompaniment from instruments.

When: 8 tonight
Where: Tate II
Price: $5 All proceeds go to Susan G. Komen Foundation

“Breast cancer affects so many women,” said Carly Nash, Zeta Tau Alpha’s philanthropy chairman. “Every single [female] on campus is at risk for breast cancer. Every guy has a mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, daughter who are also at risk. Men as well can get breast cancer. Nobody is in the clear. It’s just a huge prominent danger in our lives yet it’s so easily prevented with early notice so that’s where the awareness and education comes in.”

Last year, Zeta raised $44,000 for breast cancer research. This year, Zeta’s fundraising goal is $50,000 and BRAcappella is the first step towards reaching that goal.

All proceeds from the evening will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization dedicated to the memory of Komen that was founded by the cancer victim’s sister. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is one of the largest nonprofit organizations dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. Donations are encouraged in addition to ticket sales.

Noteworthy will also be donating 10 percent of its CD sales this evening to the foundation.

“Noteworthy and the Accidentals are such an amazing talent being able to sing like that,” Nash said. “We’re hoping to reach all different parts of campus and not just the Greek community with this being a sorority event.”

Noteworthy will be the main event at BRAcappella. The Accidentals will sing during intermission, and both a cappella groups and the Zeta Band will join together to sing the last song.

“Back in May we already decided this year to focus philanthropic work,” said Haley Godwin, a psychology major and member of Noteworthy. “Over the summer we got in touch with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We were trying to plan our own event. We jumped on [performing at BRAcappella] knowing it was going to be a great opportunity to work with another great UGA organization.”

The a cappella groups will perform recent hits in pop and hip-hop.

A special donation will be taken up when Noteworthy sings “Change the World” by Eric Clapton.

“A cappella is slowly creeping its way into college mainstream,” Godwin said. “As of five years ago, people had no idea what a cappella really was. People will actually like it because it’s something different, and it’s still new to a lot of people.”

For members of the Accidentals, BRAcappella gives them the chance to perform for the University community and raise awareness for a philanthropy that hits close to home.

“One of the guys in our group lost his dad earlier last year to cancer,” said Cooper Kitching, a recreation and leisure studies major and member of the Accidentals. “This has been something that has become near and dear to our hearts.”

Michael Finnerty, a health promotion major and member of the Accidentals, reiterates the importance of cancer awareness.

“It just gives us a chance to lend our time and talent to a great cause at the university,” Finnerty said. “Cancer affects a large proportion of students at the University and has even affected our group personally. We understand how devastating any kind of cancer can be whether it’s fatal or not.”

Both a cappella groups look forward to participating in an event that raises money and awareness for such an important cause.

“We’re kind of there to help raise money but also celebrate people who have fought and survived,” Kitching said.
