Dorms host Halloween trick-or-treaters
Freshmen living in the dorms may be used to seeing some pretty strange things in the hallways, but today they’ll see little ghosts and princesses running around.
Today the Creswell, Russell and Brumby living communities will be putting on a Halloween event for the children of the Athens community.
“[The kids] usually come in full costume and really have a lot of fun with it,” said Kara Latopolski, assistant area coordinator for Russell Community.
In addition to offering trick-or-treating in designated rooms throughout the residence halls, each building will also be providing some type of entertainment for the children.
“Creswell is going to have a haunted house in the basement,” said Deanna Mitchell, Creswell Community Council secretary. “The theme this year is zombie Georgia so we’re all going to dress up like zombie football players and cheerleaders. It should be pretty scary, so we’ll be warning little kids before they go in.”
Brumby and Russell have taken a less frightening approach.
“Brumby will be offering arts and crafts and in Russell we’ll be playing games like mummy wrap and having a cake walk,” Latopolski said.
Many residents in the three halls have already volunteered to help set up and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters.
“Handing out candy to little kids was always my favorite part of Halloween back home,” said Shawna Jackson, a freshman from Peachtree City. “I signed up to allow trick-or-treaters to come to my room so I can still have that here. I can’t wait to see all the cute costumes.”
The high-rise Halloween event has become a tradition in the community. Organizers said this year should live up to previous expectations – if not surpass them.
“We’ve invited various youth organizations, like the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, as well as the children of staff to attend,” Latopolski said. “In the past we’ve had anywhere from 50 to 100 kids, but we expect more this year.”
