Women’s swimming and diving continues streak at home pool
The Georgia women’s swimming and diving squads extended its home winning streak to 66 matches Friday, a streak that dates back to 1995-96, as it handed North Carolina a 160-126 loss in both teams season openers.
The news wasn’t as good, however, for the men’s squad as it lost to North Carolina by a 156-144 decision.
The Lady Bulldogs began the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay and didn’t stop there. Wendy Trott took the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle races while Morgan Scroggy took the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle for the Lady Bulldogs.
Other Lady Bulldog winners include Chelsea Nauta (200-yard freestyle), Sara Nicponski (100-yard breaststroke), Adrienne Bicek (200-yard butterfly), and Megan Romano (200-yard backstroke). Anne-Marie Botek won the 50-yard freestyle sprint and Hannah Moore won the 3-meter springboard on the diving side.
Tennis’ Garrapiz reaches finals at ITA Southern Regional in Athens
Georgia’s Javier Garrapiz has reached the finals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and will play this morning at 10.
The No. 7 seed in the tournament, Garrapiz defeated teammate Drake Bernstein in the quarterfinals 7-6, 6-3, before battling Florida’s Johnny Hamui in the semifinals Sunday.
Hamui proved no match for Garrapiz as he downed the Gator in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Garrapiz will face the No. 5-seed, Florida State’s Clint Bowles and he will look to defend the title for the Bulldogs’ as Nate Schnugg won the title last season.
Gilchrist heads to Southern Regional semifinals
Georgia sophomore Nadja Gilchrist rolled into the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championships in Atlanta Sunday afternoon.
Gilchrist improved to 6-2 on the young season as she controlled the tempo of the match against Georgia States Diana Nakic in a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
As the No. 43-ranked player in the country, Gilchrist will face the No. 24-ranked Noemie Scharle of Florida State today on the Georgia Tech campus.
