Bands get all spooky on All Hallows’ Eve

By on October 30, 2009

October concludes, Halloween approaches.

Football fans are flooding out of Athens today, leaving behind the craziest night of the year for this town.

Though bar windows lining downtown promise drink specials and costume contests, there is more to Halloween in Athens than the usual weekend bar crawl. If you’ve never celebrated All Hallow’s Eve in Athens, you’re in for a treat (and probably some tricks, too).

Friday, a band of local activists have found the perfect way to kick off the spookiest weekend of the year. You may have spotted them at shows wearing matching black berets, or possibly at the recent Paul Broun town hall meetings in Athens and Watkinsville, but for the past few Fridays the Washington Street Liberation Army has hosted free midnight movies at Ciné.

This Friday’s film is the Bruce Campbell Classic “Evil Dead 2.” Admission is free and costumes are encouraged.

Saturday, though, is kind of hard to believe.

283 Bar is hosting local favorite DJ Immuzikation at 10 p.m. Admission is free, but only open to those of age.

New Earth has packed the holiday spirit into this extended weekend. Saturday night is their Halloween Sin Ball, featuring DJ Sorted, D:RC and DJ43. The theme of the party is the television show “True Blood.” The party starts at 10 p.m. and admission is $5.

The guys of Kite to the Moon, who play in costume every other day of the year anyway, have organized “The Wild Rumpus, “but its conclusion is a show at Tasty World.

Doors open at 9:30 p.m., though the parade is scheduled to conclude at 11:11 p.m. Kite to the Moon is joined by Five-Eight and The Big Lebowski Revival, which covers songs from “The Big Lebowski.” The show includes a costume contest – of course – and – not so expectedly – a trapeze performance.

Krush Girls return to the 40 Watt Club on Saturday after 10 months of hiding in the shadows, spinning dance tunes at the promisingly-titled “Ghouls Gone Wild.” Gary’s Got a Boner, a Replacements cover band, and Black Francis, a Pixies cover band, are on the bill, as well as The HEAP’s tribute to Parliament-Funkadelic. Doors open at 9 p.m. and admission is $8 for 18 and up and $6 for 21 and up. Tickets can be purchased in advance at School Kids Records, or at the door.

Go Bar is hosting a Sex Pistols cover band called Bodies. The all-star bodies of Bodies include Mike Mills of REM, Winston Parker of Abandon the Earth Mission, Jim Payne of Juju and Brian Smith of The Gold Party. Local thrash/punk gods American Cheeseburger are opening, and they’re scary enough on their own. The free show starts at 10 p.m. with a dance party provided by Twin Powers following the live music.

The 9D’s ’90s Cover Band, featuring members of Daffodil, plays the soundtrack of college kids’ nostalgia. They take the stage at 9 p.m. at Little Kings for their Hell-o-ween dance party. DJ Mahogany goes on at 10 p.m. on the outdoor patio (weather permitting). The event is free, but admission at Little Kings is 21 and up.

Strawberry Flats – John Keane, Scott Sanders, Tim White and Deane Quinter – are playing a set of Jimi Hendrix covers at The Melting Point. The show begins at 9 p.m. and admission is $10 ($5 with a costume).

George McConnell & the Chalants have been posting the creepiest flyers for their Halloween show (go find them – they’re the only ones with a crabwalking Regan from “The Exorcist”).McConnell is a former Widespread Panic lead guitarist. The show is at Nowhere Bar at 10 p.m. Admission is $5 for patrons 21-and-up.

Local act Hola Halo is undergoing a gruesome transformation for their show at Flicker, where they’re on the bill as Zombie Halo. Before the show at 9 p.m., Flicker is screening the premiere of the short film “Zombies from the Black Legume.”

Pastor of Muppets is not a Metallica cover band – they are a Metallica reenactment band, and they slay. Athenian rock gods Daniel Ray, Dan Speeder, Damian Schaefer and Steve Miller sound exactly like Metallica. They’re playing at the Caledonia Lounge with Girls Own Love, an all-female Andrew W.K. cover band (featuring Sam Paulsen of We Versus the Shark and Kay Stanton of Casper and the Cookies), and Hear You Me, a Weezer cover band. Hear You Me plays nothing post-Pinkerton and consists of Robert Gunn (An Epic at Best), Jace Bartet (300 Cobras), Adam Bewley (Paper Tanks) and Scott Smith (We Versus the Shark). This is the first – and maybe only – show. Admission is $8 for the underage and $6 for those over 21 and the show starts at 10 p.m.

There is no shortage of one-time-only live music happening this weekend. Put on your scariest costume, join the massive party that is Halloween in Athens and sing your heart out – you know all the words.
