Dogs’ swimmers split
It was an SEC rivalry splash Friday night in Gainesville with the Georgia Bulldogs taking on the Florida Gators in men’s and women’s swimming and diving at the O’Connell Natatorium.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the meet strong with a 137-104 victory over the Lady Gators, improving their record to 2-0 on the young season and 1-0 in the SEC. Alison Schmitt led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a win in both the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.02 and the 500 freestyle in 4:44.72. Lauren English, Sara Nicponski, Lisa Caprioglio and Megan Romano took home a victory in the 400 medley relay in 3:40.18. Nicponski also went on to claim the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.83. Anne-Marie Botek’s time of 22.61 topped the 50 freestyle while Morgan Scroggy went on to claim the 100 freestyle in 49.82.
In the men’s meet, the Bulldogs dropped a 139-104 decision, starting the season with an 0-2 record and 0-1 in the SEC. Georgia’s Owen Blank had a strong showing, picking up a win in the 3-meter springboard competition with an impressive score of 356.93 points.
Troyden Prinsloo took the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:27.80 as well as a win in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:08.32. Paul Jennings claimed the 50 freestyle in 20.59 while Bill Cregar clocked a 2:04.42 to take the top time in the 200 breaststroke.
Georgia returns to the pool this Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Athens against Emory University.
