Today in UGA history
1982:
University students from Brumby, Creswell and Russell halls banded together to create the “Students for an Asbestos-Free Environment” group.
They wanted to pressure the University to eliminate what they said was a definite asbestos threat in the University’s dorms.
They planned to file a lawsuit against the University for its asbestos ceiling policy.
1992:
The University became more handicapped accessible by improving entryways in several dorms and offering a service van.
The van began taking students with mobility restrictions to any place on campus.
1995:
The Red & Black offered a $200 reward for information relating to 8,000 copies of the paper that were stolen the day before.
The paper was reprinted the day the copies were stolen, at a cost of $670, and was back in the racks across campus by 11 a.m.
This wasn’t the first time copies of the newspaper were stolen though.
On June 1, 1993 about 15,000 of the 16,000 copies of The Red & Black were stolen.
2000:
University students held a rally promoting awareness of sexual assaults in the Athens area after police announced a string of rapes were most likely the work of a serial rapist.
The rally focused on the fact that the majority of assaults are committed by someone the victim knows.
