UGA soccer wins regular season finale

In what will likely go down as the final match for Georgia soccer’s eight seniors at the UGA Soccer Stadium, the 22nd-ranked Bulldogs (14-4-1, 7-4-0 SEC) pulled out a crucial 2-1 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers (8-8-3, 4-5-2), thanks to a pair of second half goals on Senior Night Friday.
The win also moves Georgia head coach Patrick Baker into a tie for the school wins record, equaling the mark of 65 wins recorded by former Georgia Coach Bill Barker from 1995-1999.
Georgia had the advantage in possession for most of the first half, but neither team looked particularly threatening attacking the opposing goal.
Georgia mustered perhaps the best chance of the period with around 30 minutes remaining when forward Ashley Miller fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that grazed the cross bar.
The second period of play started in much the same fashion, with both teams struggling to capitalize in the offensive third of the field.
However, the teams started trading punches with 30 minutes remaining in the second frame.
Georgia’s Caroline Simpson put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first, receiving an assist from Carrie Patterson and firing a well-placed shot past the Tennessee keeper to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
The assist puts Patterson alone atop the Georgia record books once again, as the senior took sole possession of the Georgia career assists record with the 22nd of her illustrious career and fifth on the season.
The Georgia lead didn’t last long, as the Volunteers’ Jayden Barrett capitalized on a breakdown in the Georgia defense and fired a low shot past a sliding Michelle Betos to knot the game at one goal apiece just over eight minutes later.
Less than a minute later, Georgia responded when midfielder Alex Hooker shook a Tennessee defender at the top left corner of the 18-yard box before firing a curling shot that bent just under the crossbar to put the Bulldogs back in front 2-1.
Hooker’s goal proved to be the game winner for the Bulldogs, who fended off some late offensive pushes by the Volunteers to pick up their 14th win of the 2009 season.
Georgia’s focus now shifts to Orange Beach, Fla., where the Bulldogs will head on Wednesday for their SEC Tournament first round match, to be played at 7:30 p.m. Georgia is a No. 5 seed for the tournament and will face the South Carolina Gamecocks, a team it defeated 2-1 just two weeks ago.
