Bulldog swimmers, divers face Emory today

By on November 4, 2009

The Bulldogs’ swimmers and divers will be back in the pool today when they face off at the Gabrielsen Natatorium against Emory at 5 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 and coming off a victory Friday against Florida in Gainesville and are looking to keep their 66 match home winning streak alive.

The men’s swimming and diving squad has gotten off to a rough start this season, losing its first two meets of the season to North Carolina and Florida, respectively.

It was not, however, a bad week in the awards department for the Bulldogs. Troyden Prinsloo was named the SEC Male Athlete of the Week and Andrew Gemmell was named SEC Freshman Athlete of the Week, the SEC announced Tuesday.

Not to be outdone, Allison Schmitt was named the SEC Female Athlete of the Week after winning the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races against the Gators.

For today’s meet, the Lady Bulldogs will attempt to stay perfect against Emory, as they have claimed a 17-0 all-time record against the Eagles. The Bulldogs will be seeking their 25th straight victory over Emory.

Double amputee to sign book before game Saturday

Scott Rigsby, a double amputee who had both legs removed following an incident where he was dragged under a truck, will be signing copies of his book “Unthinkable” at the UGA Bookstore from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday before Georgia’s game against Tennessee Tech.

“Unthinkable” discusses Rigsby’s determination and effort to compete in the Ironman, a triathlete competition that involves a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.

Rigsby is a UGA alumnus from Camilla, who was the first double amputee to complete the ING Marathon in Atlanta. Two years ago he became the first person without two legs to earn the title of Iron Man in Kona, Hawaii.
