THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Oscar Mayer Weenie Hotdoggers

The Red & Black rode “shotbun” with hotdoggers Laura Moller and David Denny as they drove around campus Tuesday.

The two recent University graduates have been driving an Oscar Mayer Weenie Mobile, which they lovingly call Jill, since June, covering the Southeast one dog at a time.

They man one of six trucks throughout the country appearing at local events where they hand out weenie whistles and play one of the 22 versions of the famous Oscar Mayer jingle.

The Weenie Mobile will be at ATO’s blood drive today from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

What are some fun things you have done with the Weenie Mobile?
Moller: We got to swim with the whale sharks when we were at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta – that was fun.

Look for us this Sunday at half time at the Falcons game. We will be riding down the 50 yard line.

Denny: Over the summer they sent one out to Hawaii. They sent it by a barge with two partners.

They only do that about every six years, so two lucky people got to cruise around Hawaii for a few months in the summer.

What is the best way to make a hotdog?
Moller: It depends on where you go. In Chicago they refuse to put ketchup on their hot dogs, they absolutely will not.

In Cincinnati, where I am from, they love chili dogs.

What kind of gas does the mobile use?
Denny: It runs on high octane mustard.

What’s it like driving the Weenie Mobile?
Moller: People get so excited when they see you, and you feed off that.

People come up and say “You’ve made my day.”

Denny: I love seeing people’s reactions.

They pull out their cameras and phones so fast. Sometimes they are excited, but sometimes they just look at you in shock.

The hardest thing about driving is backing up, since there are no side mirrors. One of us normally has to get out.

What are your favorite Oscar Mayer phrases?
Moller: “This was franktastic!” or “I relished our time together!”

Denny: “We spread miles of smiles.” On the speaker I like to say, “Have a buntastic day.”

Or sometimes with little kids I will talk to them straight, like the hot dog is talking to them. “Hey. What’s up? Do you like Sponge Bob?”

What is your stance on hamburgers?
Moller: I am an equal opportunity cookout food enthusiast.

Have you ever gotten a ticket in the Weenie Mobile?
Moller: When you’re a giant hot dog, you go the speed limit.

Denny: We like to play it by the rules.

How do you become a hotdogger?
Moller: We recruit across the country. The deadline to apply is in January.

If you make it past your first interview, then you go to the headquarters in Madison, Wis. If you’re lucky and cut the mustard, you get the job.

Denny: After you get the job you go to two weeks of training called Hot Dog High.
