Committee approves $3 ‘green fee’
Students may see an additional fee next fall – a $3 green fee.
The mandatory fees committee voted Friday to approve the green fee but not to consider the proposals for a $4 health fee, $1 Recreational Sports fee, $2 Campus Life fee or $2 transportation fee after the Board of Regents approved a $200 special institutional fee on Tuesday. The regents suggested a “one-year moratorium on other fee increases, with the exception of fees . with clearly demonstrated students support.”
“The three fees under my supervision – the student activity fee, health fee and recreational fee – don’t meet the narrow definition and don’t fit in this category,” Rodney Bennett, vice president for student affairs, said to the committee on Friday morning.
Will Rooks, Graduate Student Association president, asked the committee to consider the increase in fees per service at the Health Center. Katie Barlow, Student Government Association president, addressed the increase in room rental fees under Campus Life for student groups. The committee decided to include the concerns in the final recommendation to University President Michael Adams but decided not to consider the proposals.
The committee unanimously approved the green fee and agreed more thought is needed before the actual implementation.
“We’ll try to stay true to the spirit of this proposal but go from there,” said Tim Burgess, senior vice president for finance and administration. “We need to ask a few questions: What do we want this fee to do? What is our priority? How do we hold this accountable?”
