Army Major General to give talk on Iraq and Afghanistan
Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, known for his role in training Iraqi troops, will share his experiences during a lecture tonight.
The lecture, hosted by the Roosevelt Institute, is titled “America’s Two Wars: The Future in Iraq and Afghanistan” in room 101 at 7 p.m. The instititution is a national student-run think tank that encourages collective action to solve communal problems through research, composition and advocacy of public policy, according to its Web site.
“This lecture is illustrative of our purpose to promote political discussion among college students,” said Lucas Puente, chairman of the executive board of the University’s chapter of the Roosevelt Institute.
Eaton has served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, including combat and post-combat assignments in Iraq, Bosnia and Somalia. He also served as commanding general of the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team in Iraq from 2003 to 2004. Eaton has also appeared on “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and other TV programs to discuss Iraq policy and was an adviser to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
“I can’t think of many people who are as qualified in this subject,” Puente said.
Eaton will speak about his experiences in Iraq as well as Iraq and Afghanistan policy.
“We all know someone who has fought or is currently fighting with the forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s important to understand, appreciate and fully acknowledge those actions of service and use that information to make informed decisions that will affect their future and the future of our country,” Puente said.
