Stillpoint magazine hosts poetry reading
More than three decades ago, a group of artistic University students decided it was time they had a creative outlet on campus. They thought there was a void in the campus community and the University’s writers and artists needed a forum of their own.
To fill this artistic void, they created Stillpoint, a student-run literary magazine that is published annually each spring and contains the poetry, prose and artwork of various University undergraduates.
“It’s been around for a long time, but not many people know about it,” said Chip Blackburn, an English major from Roswell and Stillpoint’s senior editor.
According to Blackburn, the magazine’s low profile almost led to its disintegration not long ago.
“A couple years ago, Stillpoint was kind of on the verge of petering out, but the past couple years it has really picked back up again,” he said. “We’re getting more members, we’re getting more submissions and better quality submissions.”
Tonight, the magazine is hosting its annual poetry reading featuring the artwork of several students and readings by nine undergraduate poets. Listeners are invited to enjoy free refreshments and will also have the opportunity to pick up a copy of the last year’s magazine.
As the magazine continues to grow, so does Stillpoint’s campus presence. Along with the annual reading, the staff hopes to increase the number and variety of events it hosts.
“We’d like to have more readings, get more guest speakers on campus and maybe even have an open mic night,” he said. “We’re really just trying to diversify our events.”
