OUR TAKE
Satisfactory grade
Confusing C-minus policy should be standardized across all majors
The Red and Black editorial board encourages the Curriculum Committee to take a serious look at SGA’s proposal’s to make C-minus a passing grade throughout the University.
Students should not have to continue to wait for a University-wide standardization of grading policy. It lags behind many similar institutions in this respect.
Different departments, and even majors, have varying requirements on what letter grade is considered passing.
The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication considers a C-minus a passing grade in a course. The Terry College of Business requires a C in the course to receive the credit necessary to progress in its majors. This discrepancy continues throughout the University’s colleges.
Students who major in two or more schools must juggle not only the various required courses but each school’s definition of a passing mark.
As more students pursue dual degrees, the University should ease the burden on students by establishing one grading policy. The University of Georgia should keep the needs of the student body in mind.
Students should not be forced to spend more precious time and money on retaking a course because the University can’t make up its mind.
In the meantime, students should make sure they know all the requirements for their degrees. Information can be found with academic advisors and at bulletin.uga.edu.
