Georgia’s Trott claims NCAA title in 1,650 freestyle
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Wendy Trott won the 1,650 freestyle title to highlight Georgia’s efforts on the final day of the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at Purdue’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The Lady Bulldogs, who finished fifth with 342.5 points, got individual NCAA titles from Trott, Allison Schmitt (the 200 and 500 freestyle) and the 800 freestyle relay in the three-day event.
“I am disappointed in the result, but not in my team,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “I am real happy with the character of our team. We had some slip-ups that took us out of contention, and at the highest level you can’t afford to make mistakes. But this group fought as hard as they could all the way to the end, and I have so much respect for them.”
Trott, a sophomore from Capetown, South Africa, won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:48.87 – more than eight seconds better than Princeton’s Alicia Aemisegger (15:57.02). Trott also was the 1,650 freestyle champion at the 2009 NCAAs.
“I was really hoping to win this race again, but it’s a hard race to predict,” Trott said. “I just wanted to have fun and do my best. We didn’t get the team result we wanted, but I am proud of the girls. They put their heart and soul into this meet.”
Morgan Scroggy took second in the 100 freestyle as she stopped the clock in 47.72, shaving a hundredth of a second off the third-best time in school history that she already owned. Megan Romano came in 13th with a time of 48.67.
The Lady Bulldogs got a 10th-place finish from Jana Mangimelli in the 200 backstroke. The 2010 SEC Freshman of the Year touched in 1:53.74, the third-best time in school history.
Georgia capped the night with a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Scroggy, Romano, Chelsea Nauta and Schmitt posted a time of 3:13.70.
The NCAAs for the men will be held next Thursday through Saturday at Ohio State. The Bulldogs will be sending 15 swimmers to the competition.
