Georgia duo earns NCAA women’s tennis bids
Sophomores Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist earned at-large bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships that will be held here at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex later this month.
On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Subcommittee selected the top 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete for the 2010 NCAA Championships. The singles and doubles competition will be here May 26-31, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 20-25).
Gullickson is ranked 12th nationally in singles and eighth in doubles with Gilchrist. A Palm Beach Gardens native, Gullickson owns a 24-8 singles record this year and 20-6 in doubles with Gilchrist. Gullickson will be a 9-16 seed in singles and a 5-8 seed in doubles. It is the second singles and doubles bid for both Bulldogs. Last year in the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships in College Station, Texas, Gullickson reached the semifinals of the singles. In doubles, the duo fell in the first round, and Gilchrist did the same in singles. Gilchrist, a native of Webster, N.Y., is ranked 48th nationally in singles with a 20-11 record.
In the team event, the 19th-ranked Bulldogs (12-8) earned an at-large bid and will travel to Clemson, S.C., for the first two rounds. The Bulldogs will be making their 24th consecutive NCAA appearance and open up against 39th-ranked Harvard (14-7) on Friday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Sloan Tennis Center .
