Two charged in taxi incident – one pleads, the other seeks jury trial (w/documents)
A criminal court case involving a married University couple reportedly attacked in a taxi by two men while with a former Georgia football player is making its way through the Athens-Clarke County judicial system, with one man pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct charge and the other seeking a trial by jury.
Angelo Demond Brown, 20, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct July 20 stemming from the March 29 incident in which Hutson and Meghan Vann, both UGA students, were assaulted physically and verbally while riding home in an Athens taxi, according to ACC police reports. Darvel JoeMar Nelson, 20, has a Sept. 20 trial date in Athens and faces two charges of simple battery, two charges of disorderly conduct, and one charge of simple assault.
Dontavius Jackson, a former Georgia football player, was with Brown and Nelson the night of the incident but was not charged. In a statement ACC authorities said “the investigation revealed that [the player] acted as a peacemaker and tried to calm the situation,” but declined to name the player. Jackson later told reporters “Yeah, I was in the cab. I was, like, the peacemaker. But as far as in-depth, I’m not allowed to speak on it because it’s still under investigation.”

Jackson, who was arrested on July 10 by UGA police on several charges including DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, played football with Brown and Nelson at Heard County High School in Franklin, Ga. All three graduated from Heard County High School in 2008, and helped lead the Braves to an undefeated regular season in 2006.
Nelson, who stands at 6-foot-6, 360 pounds, is a starting offensive lineman for the Georgia Military College football team, located in Milledgeville.
Jackson, a tailback, was suspended by Georgia head coach Mark Richt for half of the 2010 season the day after his July 10 arrest, but three days later Jackson told Richt he planned to transfer from UGA following the end of the summer semester. Jackson’s arraignment is Aug. 17, according to ACC magistrate court documents.
Brown was initially charged with two counts of simple battery, two counts of simple assault and two counts of disorderly conduct, but under an agreement with ACC officials, Brown pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to six months probation, ordered to pay a $200 fine, is barred from Athens-Clarke County and must submit an apology letter to the Vanns.
The incident, first reported by The Red & Black in April, became the focus of the Bulldog Nation after Hutson Vann told ACC police the attack against him and his wife was the work of UGA football players.
The report states four men were involved in the incident, but only Brown and Nelson were charged, according to ACC court documents. There is no indication who the fourth man is.
The report detailed how four men, who were not named, entered the cab eating bratwursts early March 29 and sat down behind the Vanns.
Huston Vann commented on the bratwursts, saying they smelled good, and asked the men how much they cost.
One of the individuals then responded, “Shut up you stupid white racist,” according to the report.
One of the individuals reportedly then struck Hutson Vann in the back of the head. Vann turned around to face the assailants and was told “to turn around if he wanted to live,” according to the report.
Vann faced forward and put his arm around his wife. After one of the individuals struck Vann again, Meghan Vann reportedly turned around and told them to stop. One of the passengers then slapped her, the report states.
As the taxi continued to drive the passengers home, the men began making obscene comments toward Meghan Vann, according to the report, stating, “Do you want some black dick?” and “We’ll put you on a swing, gang bang you.”
The Vanns told police they were terrified and remained “hunkered down in their seats” until the four men were dropped off at East Campus Village.
