Locandro Georgia’s second straight soccer SEC Freshman Of The Week
Midfielder Nicole Locandro picked up the Georgia soccer team’s second consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week honor, the Southeastern Conference office announced Monday morning. Georgia is now 2-for-2 in the weekly honor for rookies as Alexa Newfield captured the award last week.
Locandro scored three goals and had an assist to come away with a seven-point weekend in the Bulldogs’ weekend road sweep of Mercer and Georgia State. Her goal Friday night in Macon came just 34 seconds into the second half while she added her assist in the 88th minute to help Georgia overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit – its largest margin of victory overcome in a game since the 2001 season.
On Sunday, the Marietta native added two more goals in the Bulldogs’ 5-1 rout of Georgia State in Atlanta, including the first goal of the day.
Locandro is now tied for the team lead with 10 points on four goals and two assists through the first five outings.
The 25th-ranked Bulldogs (4-1) are looking at their toughest weekend yet, as they are set to face second-ranked and national runner-up Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday at 10 p.m. ET. Georgia will remain on the Stanford campus to take on No. 8 Santa Clara on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
