HE’S OUR HERO: Freshman no stranger to Hollywood lifestyle

Do a Google search for Randall Bentley.

His background is a little different from that of the typical Georgia Bulldog.

This seemingly normal freshman lives in Russell Hall, loves Georgia football …

Oh yeah, and had a recurring role on one of NBC’s most popular shows in recent history — “Heroes.”

“I was born and raised in Marietta, but I’ve lived in Los Angeles for the past six years or so,” Bentley said.

Bentley initially got into the business after winning “Best Actor” at AMTC — the talent competition known for kick-starting the careers of Megan Fox and Mena Suvari, among others.

“My family talked me into doing it, at the time I had no real interest in pursuing acting,” Bentley said.

Upon winning the competition, Bentley split time between his hometown and the infamous Oakwood apartments in North Hollywood.

“I didn’t live in L.A. permanently until 2006,” Bentley said.

After arriving in California, things began moving quickly for the Georgia native.

He landed guest-star roles on network shows such as “Judging Amy” and “The Unit.”

“It was a little nerve-wracking at first, but by the time I did ‘The Unit’ I finally got into a rhythm,” Bentley said.

Bentley also appeared in a number of national commercials during his first few years on the West Coast.

He said he is most proud of a national spot he landed for Nintendogs — a game for Nintendo DS — in which he plays a self-described “funny little jerk.”

However, his biggest break came in 2007 when he landed the role of Lyle Bennett — little brother to Hayden Panettiere’s character Claire Bennett — for what would be a new pilot on NBC called “Heroes.”

“When I first got the role for ‘Heroes’ I was excited but I had no idea exactly what it would become,” Bentley said. “Most pilots don’t even get picked up.”

It got more than just “picked up.”

“Heroes” went on to become one of the most popular shows on network television during its first season.

With the success of “Heroes” came a notoriety Bentley had yet to experience in the early stages of his young acting career.

“The show really took off, and a lot of new opportunities started to come my way because of it,” Bentley said.

Bentley suddenly began finding himself amongst some of the more notable members of the young Hollywood actor’s circle of talent.

He once spent an afternoon at Miley Cyrus’ house and frequently would sign autographs at celebrity events next to such stars as Taylor Lautner — heart throb of the infamous Twilight saga.

It was also around this time that many top Hollywood writers — including a majority of those working for “Heroes” — went on strike.

“The writer’s strike a few years ago really killed our momentum,” Bentley said. “Around the third season, the ratings started to slip and the show never really recovered.”

As the show came to a close, Bentley said it was hard to say goodbye to his on-screen family, who he said he had become close with throughout the years on set.

The timing, however, was perfect for Bentley, who was just beginning his senior year of high school.

The break gave him a chance to be a normal high school senior for once — well, almost normal.

“I got a bit part on ‘It’s Always Sunny [In Philadelphia]’ and I took a few weeks off of school to shoot a pilot in Boston,” Bentley said.

When it came time to choose colleges, there was no debate on which university he would attend.

“My parents, my grandparents, cousins, sister — you name it. They all attended the University of Georgia,” Bentley said. “There was no other college I wanted to attend.”

Bentley has put acting on the back burner for now, though he is in talks with some producers for a starring role in an upcoming feature film.

“I’m heading back to L.A. this summer to get back to work for a few months,” Bentley said.

He is involved with Relay For Life and is a member of several intramural sports teams on campus.

It seems that this Hollywood Bulldog may be sticking around Athens.

For now, Bentley said he is content on just being a normal student.

“I love the campus here, and Athens is an awesome city,” Bentley said. “It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog.”
