Perhaps it should have been called The Drink Party.

Barely two months into its reign as the executive party of the Student Government Association, The Link has received a shot to their credibility as a liason between the students and the University.

Inman Porter, the SGA treasurer was arrested and charged with public intoxication on the inner-loop on Saturday. Shirtless, might I add.

We gave him our votes, and he’s given us reason to doubt our decision. Inman’s arrest reflects negatively on the University as a whole, and we must wonder what level of professionalism The Link plans on bringing to the table.

Does this mean SGA will be easier on alcohol-related issues?

And what if the executive committee is asked to speak in front of important delegates?

Can we trust committee members to show up sober? Or even alive? Running the wrong way on the highway is not the safest activity in which one can engage.

We’re concerned.

The chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And after this weekend’s events, that link seems pretty weak.

Look at the three pillars of the arch — “Wisdom, justice and moderation.” Saturday, Inman was 0 for 3.

Perhaps in a year when there is more selection amongst candidates, better choices in representation can be made.

But for now, we can only hope the executive party will take appropriate action — whatever that may be — and incidents such as this one will be few and far between.
