RECRUITING NOTEBOOK: A handful of Georgia teams add names to rosters to start summer
The one season that never stops at Georgia is recruiting season.
Summer is prime time for football programs to add players for the following season’s recruiting class, but it also marks the time when college athletes decide to make a change of scenery and transfer to a new place.
The month of June has proven a busy one at Georgia, with a host of new faces making plans to come to Athens.
Football
The Georgia football team, after a slow start to its recruiting season, picked up the pace and added four key players to its 2012 class.
On Sunday, Jenkins County High School teammates Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach committed to Georgia, and their announcement gave the Bulldogs a huge boost. Taylor, at 6-foot-4, 325 pounds, plays defensive tackle and is considered one of the best, if not the best, player in the state of Georgia. DeLoach is 6-foot-3, 265 pounds and slated as a defensive end or linebacker.
The players, who said from the start they would be a package deal, picked Georgia over Florida State, Auburn, Florida, Alabama and Georgia Tech.
On Saturday the Bulldogs added fullback Quayvon Hicks from Pierce County High School and punter Colin Barber from Cartersville High. Hicks, a 6-foot-2, 245-pounder took Georgia over a host of offers, including Miami, Tennessee and Georgia Tech. Barber, at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds averaged 43 yards per punt last season, and will compete immediately for the position since All-American Drew Butler has just one year of eligibility remaining.
Softball
The Georgia softball team lost three of its best players to graduation, but a transfer student from Ohio could help alleviate the loss.
Tess Sito, who during her time at Cleveland State was the two-time Horizon League player of the year, signed with the Bulldogs last week after looking at Auburn, Michigan, Arkansas and Nebraska. Cleveland State granted Sito an outright release, which allows her to play next season at Georgia, according to the Lorain County Chronicle-Telegram.
She has played pitcher and a shortstop in her time at Cleveland State. Last season on the mound she went 25-18 with a 1.70 earned-run average while striking out 312. Behind the plate she led Cleveland State in batting average (.361) slugging percentage (.542), on-base percentage (.398) and hits (60).
Volleyball
Incoming head coach Lizzy Stemke added depth to her roster with the signing of a transfer from a Big Ten school.
Elena Perri, a 6-foot outside hitter, joins the Bulldogs after playing her freshman season at Purdue. Perri saw action in five matches for the Boilermakers posting blocks against Central Michigan and Tulane and recording two kills in three attempts versus Duquesne. Purdue advanced to the Elite 8 in 2010, and Perri got the Sue Jurkonis Award for strongest freshman.
Prior to her stint at Purdue, Perri was a three-time all-state selection in high school earning honorable mention accolades her freshman and junior seasons and second team honors as a sophomore.
Swimming
The Georgia swim team stayed at home to bolster its ranks, adding three high school swimming and diving prospects.
Meghan Faulkner, John Simmons and Darcie O’Brien signed with Georgia and will join the Bulldogs for the 2011-2012 season.
Faulkner attended Brookwood High School and is 12-time All-American in the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. She was the 2011 Georgia high school state champion in the 200 individual medley and is a top prospect nationally in the event.
Simmons was the co-captain of his Peachtree Ridge High School team and helped lead the Lions to their first state championship. He was also a member of the first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays at the state championships.
O’Brien, a diving signee, attended Grayson High School and was named to the All-State team. She came in third on the 1-meter springboard at the state championships.
