COMING AND GOING: What’s here, and not, in Athens

By on August 8, 2011

During the summer Athens said goodbye to well-loved business and welcomed new ones. Find out what the new yogurt shop or French restaurant has to offer, but don’t expect the Border’s cafe to be open.

MENCHIE’S
This new frozen yogurt store opened on June 12. The rotating selection of flavors include raspberry pomegranate, Georgia peach, Reese’s peanut butter and white chocolate macadamia. Free stickers and tattoos are available to kids and adults alike. Menchie’s co-owner Beth Steele said the store’s mission is to stand out through customer service and community involvement. A second store is planned to be opened in Georgetown Square on Barnett Shoals Road this November.

FALAFEL KING

Seventy-eight percent of people who voted on Urbanspoon liked Falafel King, formerly located at 1074 Baxter Street, but the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant closed this summer.

ETIENNE BRASSERIE
This restaurant is bringing classic French cuisine to Athens. It describes itself as “quaint French restaurant with a relaxed, upscale setting.” The lunch menus includes a Hamburger Au Roquefort with candied bacon, caramelized onion, Roquefort cheese, and house-made french fries ($10). The dinner menu includes pan-seared rainbow trout, beef tenderloin with cognac peppercorn sauce and red-wine-marinated braised game hen. The restaurant also offers a full bar which offers an array of imported wines, beers and liquors.

SCHOOLKIDS RECORDS
Schoolkids Records stores continually seem to be a dying breed. Schoolkids Records announced on July 24 it would be closing its doors due to a bad economy and greedy companies. The store closes Aug. 20.

BORDERS
Though its corporate office filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, Borders announced in July that it would not just be closing the planned one-third of its bookstores and will instead be closing all Borders stores. The Athens Borders has been open in the Colonnade Promenade Beechwood shopping center on Alps Road since November 2000. Though the date depends on corporate officials, the store plans to close in early to mid-September after selling the rest of its inventory.

STEAK ’N SHAKE
The famed burger and shake joint is coming to Athens. The chain began offering steak burgers and milk shakes in 1934 in Normal, Illinois. The new restaurant will be located on West Broad Street
