Each week for six weeks, two inspirational sports stories will be featured on the Courage in Sports Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/CourageInSports). The top weekly vote-getter will proceed to the finals, which run Oct. 3-16.

Fans can vote as often as they would like and can share their vote with Facebook friends. Week four voting for Taylor opened Monday and ends on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Taylor is at home in Acworth, Ga., rehabilitating a serious neck injury that bruised his spinal cord as a result of an outfield collision with teammate Zach Cone. The accident occurred during a game against Florida State on March 6 in Athens. Since then, he has successfully completed the in-patient and “Day Program” at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

An Honor Roll student, Taylor plans to return to the University in January to continue his studies and work with the baseball program. This past June, he was a 33rd round pick of the Texas Rangers while Cone turned professional after going in the first round as the 37th overall selection.

Five Bulldogs Selected For ITA All-American Championships

Five members of the Georgia men’s tennis team have been selected to compete in the All-American Championships, according to an announcement by the ITA.

The tournament is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam and is slated for Oct. 1-9 in Tulsa, Okla. It features a 64-player singles main draw and a 32-team doubles field.

Seniors Wil Spencer and Sadio Doumbia were selected for the singles main draw, while senior Ignacio Taboada, sophomore Hernus Pieters and freshman Nathan Pasha will start off in the qualifying draw.

In doubles, the Georgia tandems of Taboada and Doumbia and Pieters and Pasha were selected for the main draw.

The tournament will start with the pre-qualifying rounds Oct. 1-2, followed by the qualifying rounds Oct. 3-5 and the main draw Oct. 6-9.

Travis Helgeson was the last Georgia player to win the singles title in 2007. It was the third straight year a Bulldog reached the finals of the ITA All-American Championships as John Isner won the crown in 2005 and advanced to the finals in 2006. In 2006, Isner and Luis Flores became the second Georgia duo to take home the doubles title.

Newfield Honored After 10-Point Weekend

Georgia sophomore Alexa Newfield turned in arguably the best weekend of her young career Sept. 9-11 and was rewarded accordingly, named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week in an announcement by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Newfield helped the Bulldogs (5-2) to a Friday-Sunday sweep of in-state foes Mercer and Georgia State by scoring four goals and chipping in two assists for a 10-point weekend. Newfield is now the owner of Georgia’s last three multi-goal games dating back to Oct. 21, 2010 vs. Alabama.

Her two goals vs. the Bears on Friday proved to be the difference as Georgia defeated Mercer 2-1 in overtime. Newfield’s game-winner with 5:57 on the clock in the first extra period was her second overtime winner in three games as she also broke the tie vs. Minnesota Sept. 2, adding that to her first tally in the 14th minute. Sunday against GSU, Newfield matched that output with two more goals added two assists to have a hand in all four Bulldog goals in the 4-1 win.

The outstanding weekend vaulted the Atlanta native atop the SEC stat charts as she now stands first in points (15), tied for first in goals (6), first in shots (31), and first in shots per game (4.43) in the conference.

The weekly honor is the second of Newfield’s career after she was named Freshman of the Week during week one last season. Newfield’s rookie campaign was a memorable one, as she was named first team All-SEC and a Freshman All-America while breaking the UGA record for shots in a single season with 87.

Georgia has now won a weekly award two weeks in a row, with goalkeeper Ashley Baker earning defensive honors last Monday.

The Bulldogs are next in action this weekend as they travel to take on UNC Greensboro on Fri., Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
