Pair of Bulldogs earn SEC honors
Georgia swimmer Jared Markham has been chosen as the Southeastern Conference Male Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Tuesday.
Markham, a native of Centennial, Colo., helped lead the Bulldogs past Georgia Tech in the season-opening meet last Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium. In his first appearance as a Bulldog, Markham won the 200 backstroke in 1:50.37 and finished second in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:00.22. Markham also swam the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay that had a winning time of 3:05.99.
Markham arrived in Athens boasting a strong resume, including Junior National titles in the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley, Colorado state records and titles in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and a stint on the United States National Youth Team.
Georgia’s squads will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against North Carolina at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Brandon Lord Named SEC Co-Men’s Runner Of The Week
Georgia sophomore Brandon Lord has been awarded one of three Southeastern Conference Men’s Runner of the Week honors for his performance at the Wisconsin Invitational, according to a recent league announcement.
Lord, a 5-9 native of Chattanooga, Tenn., clocked a career-best 8k time of 24:24 to be the top SEC finisher and take 37th overall out of 270 runners at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wisc., on Oct. 14.
This marked the second time Lord has recorded the top finish for his team after also registering the low score for the Bulldogs at last year’s Greater Louisville Classic. Lord’s finish at the Wisconsin meet, which was considered to have been one of the most competitive fields for a regular season event in history, helped propel Georgia to a 21st-place finish ahead of conference foe Florida and four nationally ranked teams.
Georgia returns to action at the SEC Championships in Maryville, Tenn., on Monday, Oct. 31. The men’s 8k is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s 6k following at 11 a.m.
