Burlesque night brings out performer in everyone
Take one part provocative dance, toss in some vaudeville, mix in a saw performer with a dash of rap duo and this cocktail of an open-mic night turns into Grotesque Burlesque.
Created by burlesque performer Carina McGeehin, the ghoulish themed DIY show takes in all types.
“We get a whole lot of vaudevillian type performers, belly dancers, traditional burlesque and we have a ukulele player,” McGeehin said. “We pretty much throw everyone in a room together and say, ‘Perform.’”
The show is part of a monthly series by Burlesque Beta, which is an extension of Effie’s Club Follies, a “comedy burlesque” group based in Athens.
“We have a lot of people who weren’t in the troupe who were interested in performing,” McGeehin said, “who weren’t ready to do straight burlesque that have a lot of talent to maybe bring to the troupe.”
To McGeehin, burlesque dancing has got its own tantalizing and classic style.
“It’s classy and very sexy … and has a lot of elements of entertainment,” she said. “Every act is different depending on what the performers decide to do … so far, it has been focused more on dance styles.”
This recipe for revelry and ghastly horrors isn’t limited to one strain of competition – it also adds bearded ladies, hoops and rappers to the pot.
Vaudeville shock performer Mux Blank, of Mr. Blank’s Carnivale of Black Hearts, will be unleashing his “Dirty Harriette the Bearded Lady.”
The act “honors the old timey bearded lady burlesque act,” he said. “At the same time, kind of making fun of burlesque and drag queen acts.”
In grotesque fashion, hoop dancer Samantha Gabai will be performing a “beat-up little girl dance routine.”
“Hoop dancing is something in between dancing and object manipulation,” she said. “You learn how to use the force of the hula-hoop with your own movements and incorporating it with your dance.”
She will dance appropriately synchronized with the song “Little Girl,” by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.
In addition to melting pot of everything grotesque, horror film trailers by local filmmakers Gonzoriffic will be shown in between acts to entice the audience with snippets of terror.
McGeehin is also open for anyone brave enough to enter the stage last-minute – whether it’s dreadful or not.
“Pretty much any one who wants to, can join up to perform,” she said. “Anything that someone wants to get up and do, I’m open for.”
