Four Bulldogs named to soccer CoSIDA Academic All-District

Four members of the Georgia soccer team were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for their performances on the field and in the classroom during the 2011 season, the organization announced Friday.

Senior defender Jenna Buckley and sophomore defender Torri Allen were named to the first team for District 4 and automatically advance to the Academic All-America ballot, while sophomore attacker Alexa Newfield and junior goalkeeper Ashley Baker were named to the second team.

Buckley – a Finance major from Atlanta – has played in all 20 games for the Bulldogs, starting 18 of them and tallying two assists. She was selected to the 2008-09 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 SEC Fall Academic Honor Rolls, to the UGA Dean’s List and the UGA Director’s Honor Roll, and is a Presidential Scholar.

Allen, out of Stafford, Va., is an Animal Health (Pre-Vet) major having played in 18 games for Georgia with nine starts in her second season. She scored her first career goal in 2011 after shifting to the attack vs. UNC Greensboro. Allen was named to the 2010-11 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and to the UGA Director’s Honor Roll last season.

Newfield – a Sport Management major from Atlanta – has started all 20 games on the Bulldog front line, and continues to lead the team and the Southeastern Conference in goals (15), points (38), and shots (98). She has also added eight assists, while her seven game-winning goals rank fifth in the NCAA. Newfield is a two-time first team All-SEC honoree, and was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and to the UGA Director’s Honor Roll last year.

Baker has started all 20 games in goal for the Bulldogs, playing over 1,800 minutes and amassing a 1.17 goals against average and 83 saves, posting five shutouts. A Recreation and Leisure Studies major, the Lilburn, Ga., native was a 2008-09 Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection and was named to the 2009-10 and 2010-11 SEC Fall Academic Honor Rolls, as well as to the UGA Dean’s List and the Director’s Honor Roll.
