OUR TAKE: Southern hospitality
This weekend marks the Georgia Bulldogs facing off against the Auburn Tigers between the hedges. But the football teams won’t be the only ones meeting up. The University Student Government Association is hosting Better Relations Day with Auburn University this Friday.
We support this program as it pairs off student representatives from both of our schools in order to foster relationships and provide outlets to share what students at both schools are doing. This will likely keep students aware of how the student body at one of our peer institutions in the Southeastern Conference sees the world and provide networking opportunities for those who attend.
This is The Link being the link and reaching across the aisle to one of our rivals, and we appreciate that. If more people were willing to hear the other side of the story, the opinions section of this paper wouldn’t be so volatile.
We appreciate The Link administration continuing this tradition in a time of budget cuts and bare-bones funding.
This administration seems to recognize the establishment of traditions is at the heart of a thriving campus experience. From the Freshmen Welcome Ceremony to the implementation of the Okeefonokee Oar, The Link has created some new traditions of its own. However, it has also maintained those implemented by previous administrations as well.
As our rivalry with Auburn is the oldest rivalry in the South, it’s refreshing to find our peers reaching over the walls our ancestors built in order to nurture a fruitful relationship with the Tigers.
That being said, we hope the representatives have fun on Friday so that there is something Auburn students can find some joy in during their ride home on Saturday night.
