Sports Notebook: Bulldog goalkeeper Baker named to community service team; Baseball, golf add recruits
For the second consecutive year Georgia soccer goalkeeper Ashley Baker has been named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
The SEC sponsors service teams for all 20 league-sponsored sports. The team seeks to highlight a student-athlete from each member institution who gives back to his or her community in superior service efforts. This edition marks the eighth annual team for women’s soccer, while Baker was also Georgia’s representative in 2010.
The junior from Lilburn, Ga., has been active in the local community participating in a number of soccer-related outreach efforts, including coaching a recreational soccer team this past spring in nearby Watkinsville and teaming up with former UGA assistant Steve Nugent for a goalkeeping camp.
Additionally, Baker volunteered at the Taste of Athens 10K benefitting Community Connection of Northeast Georgia, and is a frequent visitor to the Athens Boys & Girls Club and St. Mary’s Hospital. She volunteered at the Special Olympics/UGA student-athlete baseball game on campus this year organized through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and put on a “Pups In The Park” event through UGA Hero and the Humane Society.
Baker is in her second season as the Bulldogs regular starting keeper, starting all 21 games and logging over 1,900 minutes in goal for Georgia. She has six shutouts to her name in 2011 – including last time out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament vs. Kansas – and has stopped 87 shots for a 1.11 goals-against average.
She and her teammates will head to take on top-seeded Duke in their NCAA second-round matchup on Fri., Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Diamond Dogs add new recruits
Casey Moody, Michael Peel and Austin Wallace are the latest additions to the baseball recruiting class after each signed a national letter-of-intent to attend UGA, Bulldog coach David Perno announced Tuesday.
Here is a look at the newest Bulldogs who will be joining the program for the 2013 season:
CASEY MOODY: A 6-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher/third baseman from Griffin, Ga., Casey is a two-sport standout in football and baseball at Spalding High School, his father serves as his baseball coach. In his prep career with the Jaguars, Moody has tallied 29 home runs and 190 RBI while going 25-8 on the mound with 190 strikeouts. As a junior, he batted .571 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI, all team-highs, and went 10-1with 68 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. He led his team to a 33-5 record, the finals of the state playoffs, the 4-AAA Region title and a top 20 national ranking. He was named the 4-AAA Player of the Year, the Region Pitcher of the Year, All-Region and earned Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. He batted a team-best .534-8-71 as a sophomore when the Trojans went 24-7. He was 8-3 with 64 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched. Moody has been a key part of the East Cobb Braves summer league team, and they have won the 17U Perfect Game national title and BCA national crown.
“To get an opportunity to attend and play baseball at UGA is a dream come true,” said Moody.
“Casey is a dual threat as a pitcher/third baseman, and he understands the game,” said Perno. “His future may be as a pitcher, but he has power as a hitter and does a good job at third base.”
MICHAEL PEEL: A 6-6, 210-pound right-handed pitcher from Claxton, Ga., Michael is a two-sport star in football and baseball at Claxton High School, he is a two-time recipient of the pitching award for the Tigers and coach Donny Sikes. He earned All-State and All-Region 3-A honors as a junior along with the team’s hitting award. He has been the ace for the Tigers the past three seasons. Peel has played on the Round Trip Baseball summer league team that reached the final eight of the World Wood Bat Association 18U Tournament. He has been named to the Perfect Game Underclass All American 2nd Team.
“It is a dream come true to become a part of the Bulldog family,” said Peel.
“We’re excited to have Michael become a Bulldog, and we even considered bringing him in January because he’s going to be ready to contribute once he steps on campus,” said Perno.
AUSTIN WALLACE: A 6-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher from Kathleen, Ga., Austin is a two-sport standout in football and baseball, he is an Honor student at Houston County High School. Wallace went 4-2 with a 3.75 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 45 innings for the Bears and coach Jason Brett. A two-time All-American, he has earned the FCA Award in 2011, the Coaches Award in 2010. He was selected for Team Georgia this past summer and has been ranked among the top 20 players in the state. Also, he is active with the Partners Club, a school group that volunteers with special needs children.
“After taking the time to visit other SEC and ACC schools, I now realize there is no where else I would rather be, and I’m so excited to be a Bulldog,” said Wallace.
“Austin comes in with three quality pitches, a fastball, a change-up and a big-time slider, and he’s one of the most developed right-handers coming out of high school in the state,” said Perno. “He will have the ability to contribute in multiple roles as a starter and closer.”
The early signing period continues through Wednesday.
Garber, McCoy To Join Georgia’s Men’s Golf Team
Joey Garber of Petoskey, Mich., and Lee McCoy of Palm Harbor, Fla., will be joining the Georgia men’s golf team, Bulldogs coach Chris Haack announced Tuesday.
A transfer from Michigan, Garber will enroll in January and will be eligible to compete for the Bulldogs when the spring portion of their schedule begins in February. As a freshman in 2010-11, Garber helped the Wolverines win the NCAA Central Regional and come in 10th in the NCAA Championships. He saw action in all 14 tournaments, posting two top-5, four top-10 and six top-20 efforts. His best finish was as the runner-up at the Ridges Intercollegiate. Garber’s scoring average of 74.08 was the third-best effort ever by a Michigan freshman. Garber is a graduate of Petoskey High School. During his prep career, he earned Michigan’s No. 1 ranking from National Junior Golf Scoreboard and Golfweek, and he was a two-time Mr. Michigan Golf.
As a high school senior, McCoy signed a national letter of intent with the Bulldogs. He is a native of Palm Harbor, Fla., who now lives in Clarkesville and attends Habersham Central High School. He was chosen as a Rolex Junior All-American in 2010 and 2011. He came in second in the American Junior Golf Association’s Rolex Tournament of Champions and he placed third in the 2010 AJGA Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Championship. McCoy twice was chosen as the Orlando Junior Golf Player of the Year and the Pinellas County Junior Golf Player of the Year. McCoy’s success on the links dates back to 2000 when, at the age of six, he won the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship.
“We are very excited about having Joey and Lee join our program,” Haack said. “They are excellent prospects, and I know they will do what it takes academically and athletically to be successful at Georgia. Their golf talents are obvious, and we know they’ll get better and better. These guys should help our team stay among the best in the nation and in the SEC.”
