Volleyball squad drops pair of weekend sets to SEC foes
The Georgia volleyball teams continued its late season fade with two road losses against No. 17 Florida and South Carolina. The losses dropped its record to 11-18 overall and 7-12 in the Southeastern Conference.
The Bulldogs traveled to Gainesville, Fla., Friday to face a team that looked every bit a nationally ranked team when it beat Georgia 3-0 earlier in the season. The Bulldogs didn’t fare any better on the road as the Gators completed another 3-0 victory to ensure they didn’t drop a set against Georgia in 2011.
“We have to give Florida a lot of credit, they were extremely powerful at the net offensively and defensively-we struggled slowing them down,” head coach Lizzy Stemke said. “We weren’t getting the blocking number that we normally put up and we weren’t slowing them down enough with our blocks-the played a really efficient game.”
Georgia was unable to score more than 15 points in the match losing the sets by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14. The Bulldogs held Florida to a hitting percentage under .500 only once in the three sets as the Gators posted marks of .571, .522 and.486. These were compared to Georgia failing to hit about .200 with three set in which they hit .034, .059 and .143.
The Bulldogs were led against Florida by sophomore outside hitter Brittany Northcutt and redshirt junior Briana Bahr who both recorded five kills. Sophomore libero Allison Summers led the overworked defense with 19 digs while the team recorded only two blocks.
Georgia imposed themselves early on the Gamecocks of South Carolina but were unable to finish the deal as South Carolina pulled out a 3-1 win.
The key for the Bulldogs was losing the third set with the match tied at 1-1 and the set at 24-24. The Gamecocks took it 26-24 and never looked back as they closed out the match with a 25-15 fifth set victory.
“The game is about momentum,” Stemke said. “We came really strong in the first set-In the second set we had a couple of errors and lost momentum. We were trying to grab it back, but give a lot of credit to South Carolina. They took that momentum and rolled with it and we weren’t able to come back.”
Georgia was led offensively but sophomore Kathleen Luft with 12 kills, Luft also recorded two solo blocks. Senior middle blocker Elizabeth Reid recorded a team high five block assists.
Senior defensive specialist Carla Tietz recorded a team high 19 digs that saw her move into second all-time at Georgia with 1,473 career digs. Senior Ann Dylla also improved her career standing at the university as she moved into fourth all-time in total blocks as her three block assists raised her career total to 455.
The Bulldogs finish their season in Auburn, Ala., Wednesday night as they face the Auburn Tigers.
