MAN ON THE STREET: Goodbye to CDs?

By on November 25, 2011

Numerous reports have indicated that many major music labels will discontinue the manufacture of Compact Discs by the end of 2012. Although some limited editions may still be made, most labels are concentrating their efforts on mp3 and streaming options for their new releases.

The Red and Black asked students how they felt about the demise of this popular music format.

CONLEIGH BOWER: junior anthropology major from Cumming. “That makes me kind of sad. I don’t buy a lot of CDs, but occasionally I do buy physical copies if I really like the band or something like that.”

MELANIE BAHNSEN: sophomore food industry marketing and administration from Stoppards. “I personal prefer to have the CD. I just bought a CD yesterday; I’m a little old fashioned on that.”

SIERRA HOVET: freshman biological engineering major from Evans. “I think it’s a little bit sad. There’s something nice about holding the physical CD. It is nice for the consumers to buy everything for a low price.”

KIRSTEN BAKER: senior anthropology major from Athens. “I’m not too concerned about pop stars, but I’m glad it’s just the major labels.”
