Dating coaches turn love lives into life lessons

By on November 30, 2011

It all started on a man date.

Middle school buddies and fellow comedians Dave Ahdoot and Ethan Fixell decided they needed girlfriends.

So, naturally, they posted a video on YouTube and an ad on Craigslist to invite anyone interested to go on a double date with the duo, and, naturally, over 200 pairs of women responded.

A couple hundred double date experiences later, Ahdoot and Fixell have survived to share their tales — the good and the bad.

“At first we didn’t really discriminate and then we got pretty crazy people going on dates with us and we started being a little bit more selective,” Ahdoot said. “We had everything from meth addicts to compulsive liars.”

The search for girlfriends, though crazy at times, eventually produced results — both expected and unexpected. Both Ahdoot and Fixell found girlfriends, but they also found an act.

“We genuinely wanted to go on dates, but once we realized how crazy the dates were we realized there was some comedic potential there,” Fixell said.

Ahdoot and Fixell began to post comedic responses to their dating adventures which then spawned a comedy act in New York City. Now, the comedians are touring around the country to entertain and inform colleges.

“What’s cool about it is that it all happened very organically,” Ahdoot said.

What began as a light-hearted plea for a date has become a career.

“It started out as a way to meet girls and turned into a comedy show and now it’s a way to help people out,” Fixell said. “It’s a comedy show with some true tidbits throughout.”

Just like their show, Ahdoot and Fixell are comedians first who have rather cultivated experiences in the dating atmosphere.

“It’s about helping guys get girls, but pretty much everything we do is trying to be funny,” Ahdoot said.

Through the touring of many college towns, the duo has learned that colleges guys and girls need a lot of help in the dating department.

“College students aren’t really in the dating scene yet,” Ahdoot said. “It’s kind of just people making out at parties. Yeah, I know what goes on.”

The advice is an extra bonus, but the laughs are the goal.

“What I hope people get out of it is just some laughs,” Ahdoot said. “I think a lot of people take dating really seriously and hopefully this will help them loosen up a bit.”

Although comedy is the goal, Ahdoot and Fixell have also been able to achieve some success with audience members in the dating field as well.

“We’ve helped a few people,” Fixell said. “We’ve had couples come together and we’ve done some match-making.”

The comedy act Ahdoot and Fixell perform leaves behind laughter, knowledge and perhaps an exchanged number or two.

“It’s pure awesome,” Fixell said. “ I can’t think of a better way to do it.”
