Vehicle checkpoint leads to nine DUI arrests
A Prince Avenue vehicle checkpoint yielded nine DUI arrests and 15 citations early this morning.
Members of the Athens-Clarke County traffic unit and Georgia State Patrol set up a roadblock on Prince Avenue near its intersection with Pulaski Street.
Police stopped 143 vehicles between 2:10 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. to check for “driver’s impairment,” according to an ACC police report.
The stops resulted in nine DUI arrests and 15 citations for offenses including driving on a suspended license, distracted driver and seatbelt violations.
These kinds of checkpoints are usually set up during times of the year when larger crowds are expected downtown.
In August, University Police set up checkpoints on East Campus Road and Oglethorpe Avenue, yielding six arrests. In June UGA Police held two vehicle checkpoints – one at Baxter Street and Lumpkin Street and the other at Wilkerson Street. The checkpoints also yielded six arrests (two were University students), including three DUIs.
