Student arrested for DUI, bac of .132g

A University student was arrested and charged with DUI and tail light citation by University police after failing a field sobriety test early Friday.

Senior Meleah Matheny, 21, was stopped by a University Police officer after he observed her Honda Civic turning on to South Street. The officer observed that Matheny’s headlights were on, but her tail lights were not illuminated.

After the officer initiated a traffic stop at 1:45 a.m., he observed the odor of alcohol coming from Matheny’s breath, according to the police report.

The officer reportedly asked her how much she had been drinking that night and Matheny said that she had one drink with dinner several hours before.

After observing that her eyes were glassy, the officer asked Matheny to exit the vehicle and performed a field sobriety test.

According to the police report, Matheny failed the test and the officer asked again how much she had drank. Matheny told police that she had a vodka tonic two hours before.

When asked if she consumed one or more vodka tonics, she told police that she was “pretty sure” she just had one.

Police transported Matheny to the Clarke County Jail where she blew a .132g on a breathalyzer test, according to the report.

She was given citations for tail light requirement and DUI, first offense, over age of 21.
