Thank you for not publishing “Crime Notebook”
I have noticed that The Red and Black hasn’t published a “crime notebook” column in about two weeks, and for this I must convey to you my thanks.
Although I used to read the crime notebook frequently, it was only due to my own distasteful nosiness.
Publishing names of students and details around their arrests are, for the most part, not newsworthy at all, and is more of a disservice to the affected students than it is a service to your readers.
Unless the crime relates directly to the University, they aren’t worthy of being printed by a UGA newspaper.
The recent on-campus graffiti crimes allegedly committed by students: newsworthy. A misguided freshman drinks alcohol and gets arrested downtown: leave it out.
Thanks for not printing these unnecessary stories. I hope to see this trend continue.
