OUR TAKE: Time to be heard

By on January 8, 2012

A medium as transcendent as the newspaper is difficult to successfully alter, but it is not an impossible feat.

We proved that much at the start of last semester, as The Red & Black moved from a daily print publication to a weekly version with online content updated on a daily basis.

Though much of the journalism community lauded our progressive decision, some readers didn’t seem to feel the same.

We don’t deny that our abandonment of a daily copy was a shocking shift in the daily routine. We don’t feel that all the voids our changes left were immediately filled.

But we did it with good reason and no regrets. We made a move that corresponded with technological shifts and a growing favoritism for online news.

And this semester, we’ll continue to evolve and improve. We’ll marry our print and online products in a media union that’s as useful and accessible to the reader as possible.

We’ll do so through Talk Red & Black, an online brand that focuses on a two-sided, social media-oriented conversation.

Talk Red & Black includes a Twitter account (@talkredandblack) and a Tumblr (talkredandblack.tumblr.com).

We will update both accounts with a constant stream of both newspaper- and user-generated content and multimedia.

We will publish users’ tweets in lieu of the former Soundbites section.

We will focus on introducing the newsroom to our community and introducing the voices of our community to one another.

But we need your input just as much. So follow us. Tweet at us.

Join the conversation.
