Four Georgia swimmers honored by SEC

Georgia swimmers Melanie Margalis, Lauren Harrington, Andrew Gemmell and Nic Fink have received weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference, the league announced on Tuesday.

Margalis and Gemmell were chosen as the SEC Swimmers of the Week, while Harrington and Fink garnered SEC Freshman of the Week honors. This marks the second time this season Margalis, Harrington and Fink have received SEC awards.

In Georgia’s meet at Texas, Margalis took first in the 400 individual medley and swam the third leg of the victorious 400 freestyle relay. She was second in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 butterfly. She ranks fourth in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 200 and 400 individual medley nationally.

Harrington won the 100 butterfly against the Longhorns. She took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:00.56 and anchored the 400 freestyle relay B team to a second-place finish. Harrington swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay that came in third.

Gemmell won the 400 individual medley against Texas. He placed second in the 500 freestyle and came in third in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:07.03. Gemmell is ranked fourth nationally in the 1,000 free and seventh in the 1,650 free.

Fink had two individual runner-up finishes, claiming second in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Fink also swam the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay that finished second and he swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay that came in third.

Georgia’s teams are idle until Jan. 20 when they will entertain South Carolina. The Lady Bulldogs will be trying to win their 77th straight home event, which would set the school record for all sports. Georgia also will entertain Tennessee on Jan. 21.
