Listen Up! — “You’re Not Alone”

By on January 11, 2012

With a band name as peculiar as The Sexy Accident, it’s enough that one would scan a long list of artists and at least pause to find out what this Missouri band is cracked up to be.

"You're Not Alone"

Its new album, “You’re Not Alone,” coming out in February 2012, also has a strange aspect to it — it’s only three songs long.

And it’s obvious from the start: the album brings in a dark field which continues to darken as the bass and guitar tracks bring upon a sense of a deep loss. The album cover, a black and white scene of barren trees, speaks of every word that is unreachable from the opening track. And the smooth, saddening drum beat slowly passes, mixed in with beautiful harmonies from Jesse Kates and Camry Ivory as the cover track unfolds, so that even though the depressing emotion in the album’s cover track is strong, it hands out a sense of recovery, or even redemption.

It’s almost as if an Oompa-Loompa would base its theme song off of the second track, or a 1920’s “Mickey Mouse” cartoon sound editor could be caught red-handed with it. The influences of older classics such as The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” express themselves in the coming of “I’m Just Trying To Help (Me Like You).” The interesting ballet brings upon a more delightful mood as the typical sounds of the ’50s present themselves in a beautiful fashion, built on the melodic talents of Ivory.

And then the rock tones I’d been waiting for finally pushed through the door in the final track, “All Surface [Redux].” It’s an excellent song that Ivory enhances with perfect tones, like a lullaby that would knock any age into a heavenly sleep.

This obscure band will set the mood of your day. Once both earbuds are in and the music has taken over your world, the tone and flow of every song seems to pulse through your veins like blood until your heart is finally touched. A three-album track represents all aspects of The Sexy Accident a fan would anticipate and love.

One message to that fan though: You’re Not Alone.
