It may be the new popular job for students right after delivering pizzas.
Last year, a total of 155 additional University students signed up to become sugar babies on SeekingArrangement.com, according to a press release from the website.
A sugar baby is a young person who provides companionship to an older sugar daddy or mommy in exchange for money and gifts.
The University had the second-highest number of students signing up in 2011 among colleges. New York University was in first place with 185 new signups. Georgia State University and the University of Southern Florida were also in the top 20.
“In 2011, we saw an explosion in the number of college students seeking Sugar Daddies to help pay their college tuition,” said Brandon Wade, founder and CEO of Seeking Arrangement, in the press release.
Wade said one of every two sugar babies who join the website today are college students. He said they now make up 40 percent of the sugar baby population.
In an article published by The Red & Black last September, 281 University students were signed up as sugar babies. Since then, the number has rocketed to 366 sugar babies at the University, said Jennifer Gwynn, public relations manager for Seeking Arrangement – a jump of 85 students in about four months.
“An important social fabric is broken in our society, where individuals are taught to fend for themselves once they turn 18,” Wade said. “We can no longer depend on our government or our parents for our education. In the absence of these important social support systems, it’s no wonder more and more college students are relying on finding a Sugar Daddy or Sugar Mommy to pay for college.”
Seeking Arrangement offers a Sugar Baby College Certification for students who register with their university email addresses, which is how Seeking Arrangement calculates how many students from each school use the site.
Here’s the top 20 list for 2011 according to the website.
