Bulldog Track & Field Soars To Two Runner-Up Finishes In Season Opener

By on January 14, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Both senior Cory Holman and freshman Morgann Leleux had second-place finishes with near personal-best marks at the season-opening Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky., on Friday night.

“I thought we had a very nice start to the meet,” said Georgia head coach Wayne Norton.  “Cory Holman looked really strong in his first meet for us in two seasons and I still think he has room for improvement.  Morgann Leleux also moved right into the record books as a freshman in her first collegiate meet.  She vaulted particularly well early on and get better and better as time goes on.  It was a good Friday night for the Bulldogs.”

Holman recorded the second-best high jump performance of his Bulldog career to earn second-place honors.  Holman, who had another miss earlier in his series, cleared 7 feet, ¼ inches on his third attempt and finished behind Louisville’s Michael Edwards, who also cleared the height on his third and final attempt but did not have any other misses.

Holman, who sat out the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons, won the heptathlon high jump at the 2010 SEC Indoor Championships after soaring over the bar at a career-best 7-1.75.

Leleux made her Lady Bulldog debut and tied her personal best in the indoor pole vault for second place.  Leleux reached a height of 13-8.25, which shot her to fifth on UGA’s all-time top-10 list with the best mark for Georgia in the last two seasons.  Arkansas’ Tina Sutej, who set the collegiate outdoor record at the 2011 SEC Championships in Athens, won the meet with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 14-3.25.

Leleux set a national high school outdoor record during her senior season at Catholic High School (La.) after registering a height of 14-2.75.

Action at the Kentucky Invitational continues on Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s high jump.  The women’s 60-meter hurdle semifinals is the first event on the track at 12:30 p.m.
