Recruit Whitehead chooses N.C. State over Georgia
The recruiting world is good for a shocker every now and then, and Georgia got zapped on Wednesday afternoon when Kenderius Whitehead chose North Carolina State over Clemson and Georgia via his Twitter page.
Whitehead — who played his senior season at Martin Luther King High School in Atlanta — had Georgia in the lead since last summer, but surprised everyone when he announced his intentions to play for the Wolfpack.
Georgia recruited Whitehead as an outside linebacker, and that may have been what pushed Whitehead away.
M.L. King head coach Mike Carson told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that βhe [Whitehead] didn’t like the idea of playing outside linebacker and in space. That was a concern with Georgia.β
North Carolina State offered him as a defensive end, his position of preference at the next level.
Whitehead has rare athleticism for a 6-foot-5, 210-pound edge rusher, tallying 19 sacks during his senior campaign
The Bulldogs have two commitments at outside linebacker in this recruiting class in Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd and are hot on the trail to sign two more.
One of those players is Josh Harvey-Clemons out of Valdosta, who is a unanimous top-three prospect in the state.
He will decide between the Bulldogs and the Florida Gators on Feb. 1, though Louisville is thought to have an outside chance.
He visited Athens last weekend, and had nothing but glowing remarks about the Bulldogs.
Another prospect Georgia fans should keep their eyes on is Josh Dawson, a Vanderbilt commit from Tucker. Dawson has been committed to the Commodores since June but visited Georgia last weekend and came away impressed.
He will visit Vanderbilt this weekend, and render his final decision between now and National Signing Day on Feb. 1.
