Student’s murder remains unsolved after 11 years

By on January 20, 2012

Yesterday marked 11 years since the unsolved murder 23-year-old University law student Tara Louise Baker.

Eleven years has passed since the unsolved murder of University student Tara Baker. Jacob Demmitt/Staff

Gov. Nathan Deal’s office issued a death certificate for the slain student on this day last year, according to the site tarabaker.com.

Her father Lindsay Baker was quoted in the Athens-Banner Herald yesterday saying up until that point “on paper it says she’s still alive.”

A wreath was placed at the Arch, serving as a reminder of the student’s life and death.

Below a picture of Baker, a sign on the wreath reads, “It’s been TEN YEARS, and I want to send a message to her killer. Her memory lives on, and the search for you is NEVER ENDING.”

“I’ve come to the realization that my sister’s killer may never be caught,” Tara’s sister Meredith Baker told The Red & Black in 2008. “But we owe it to Tara to keep pushing her story. That’s the only way we have a chance for justice.”

Authorities responded to a fire at Bakers rented house on the eve of her 24th birthday at 160 Fawn Drive in the Deer Park subdivision off Lexington Road on the morning of Jan. 19, 2001, according to a previous Red & Black report.

After kicking in her bedroom door, firefighters found Tara amidst the flames. In a civilian casualty report, Athens-Clarke County firefighters said Tara was “incapacitated prior to ignition” and suffered injuries to “multiple parts” of her body.

Whoever killed Tara set fire to her home, possibly to cover their tracks, police said.
